10 million bicycles and Christmas Carols....

The first few days in Beijing were busy and eventful, which is a good way to describe the city in general!! Rented bikes for the day for EUR2, and blended in like the locals, well almost. Covered over 18 miles around a very very spread out city. Had a few close calls with the traffic lights, followed the crowd only to notice light was still red ! Cycling round the man made lakes was good, and eventually got to ride down the west side of Tienanmen Square which was very cool . Went for the local dish of Mongolian Hotpot for dinner, which is kind of like a poor man's Fondue, a far cry from the Melting Pot in Hoboken. The shrimp were the scariest...looked almost alive! Saturday we did the Forbidden City, the home of Emperors for hundreds of years, at the very heart of Beijing a site from which the entire city propagates, and finished the day watching the flag lowering ceremony in Tienanmen Square at dusk, 6pm, which attracts hundreds of on lookers, after which the entire square lights up. After a few Tsing Tao's on Sat night, Sunday was a slow day, booked a flight to Xian for Friday 3rd since the trains are all booked up and a hostel there for 5 nights. Air ticket was only EUR64 for a 2 hr flight, not bad, and the great thing is that the website deliver the ticket to the hostel and accept COD as payment!! Sunday afternoon checked out one of the main parks in Beijing which had great views of the fog smothered city. Also - it was a big hang out spot for the locals on a Sunday afternoon, where they gather and sing, play music or perhaps do some karaoke as you can see in the video link.

We were even asked to sing an English song...but declined !! Bed early as need to be up at 6am following day for the Great Wall climb.....................zzzzz

The People's Republic of C....

Day One in Transit..so far so good. Journey was fairly painless and all flights on time, so happy about that.
It was a clear day coming into Beijing, and pilot mentioned that he could see the great wall....but only told us after....it can be seen from space and I missed it from a few thousand feet!! Ah well, day trip later anyway.
The Beijing airport is very 21st centry - terminal was built for the Olympics. There was even signs to guide Olympic travellers along. Made it to hostel on train, subway and walking, good going on first day.
Small stroll around the city in the evening was enough for the first day.Its basically like any other city, traffic, hussle etc - but with loads of bikes, and bike lanes on every street that are wider then your regular bus lanes! Bit surprised that they got carried away with all Ireland fever here too - as you can see from the pic......and I though we were in the People's Republic !! Loads of taxi's are painted green and gold also.......
Strolled down a few Hutongs which was a bit of an adventure, and tried to find a place to eat with an english menu...but were looking for a while. Settled for a place with pictures of food - but alas when we went in, we were given menu with English translation, phew!!
Some old favourites from lunches in Chinatown (thanks Wende, Qian!!) were perfect.
Night life in the Hutongs is pretty cool....found a bar full of Westerners and had 1 or 2 to help sleep with the jetlag! Beer for 30c for 1/2 litre...a steal! Hope to rent bikes tomorrow.....

Final Push....getting on the Road

Well, after 5 weeks in Ireland, I'm finally leaving, and as usual, up late packing last minute the night before. Wouldn't have it any other way!! Tomorrow takes me to Beijing via London and Cork - so nearly set. Of course.....blog is setup, at last !!
